Heartworm season is coming !
It's May and it's the busy time of the year for us vets. It is the time when veterinarians are starting to check more and more cats and dogs. As weather changes and temperatures rise, pets run a higher risk of infestation with fleas, heartworm and other parasites. The heartworm (Dirofilaria immitis) has become a global pest affecting dogs, cats and other animals.
It is a dangerous parasite and, if untreated, fatal. Prevention is highly recommended and simple. All it takes is a blood test and regularly administered preventive medication. Having a heartworm test done basically determines if your cat or dog has picked up the parasite in the previous season. It is a good idea to bring a fresh fecal sample to your vet in order to check for other parasites.
